Build times have been reduced as well, so you can get a number of these things out into the field a lot faster. If you know the tech tree layout, it seems as though it doesn't take very long until the experimental units are unlocked. This thing is absolutely devastating if unleashed on an enemy base, and is pretty cool to look at too. With the Cybran faction, for instance, you can unlock a monstrous Tyrannosaurus cyborg that stomps across the battlefield and breathing fire on anything nearby. The best reason to power through the tech tree is to unlock experimental units, which like before are gigantic and can dramatically turn the tide of battle. This means you won't find the lesser units become as useless as, say, the Tech 1 units from the first game. Units on the field will gain veterancy as they fight, but can be augmented further in the tree to be made more effective as the fighting continues. There are quite a few upgrade options, so getting to know the tree progressions and exactly what gets unlocked will be important to victory in a competitive game. Depending on your strategy going in, you allocate research points to any one of these branches, unlocking more powerful options along the way. You gain points for this over time as matches progress, and can invest in five branches – air units, land units, sea units, structures and your armored command unit (ACU). Each factory will be able to build a few basic units right away, but if you want to access upgrades to range and firepower and durability as well as new units, you'll have to turn to the tech tree, which replaces the Tier progression of the original. Depending on the composition of the map you're playing on, this can mean building a land factory, air factory, or sea factory to produce units best suited to traverse the terrain and beat up on your opponents. Once you've accumulated mass and energy, the game's two resources, you can go about constructing your army. Before building any units, you'll want to strengthen your economy, so you'll need to build mass extractors and energy generators. You'll start out a skirmish or multiplayer match with an ACU and a few engineers. Overall the structure of the game remains similar to the first.
